Traditional leadership, with its rigid structures, hierarchies, and solutions, no longer serves the survival of organizations.

In nature, organisms that fail to adapt must move or die. The same is true in leadership, to a somewhat different yet eerily similar extent. Our world is speeding up. Change is ubiquitous and happens faster than ever before. With this change come opportunities and challenges. Only organizations whose leaders enable them to take advantage of the opportunities and successfully navigate the challenges will survive.

Adaptive leadership is the ability to recognize the need for innovative solutions in the face of evolving challenges instead of trying to solve new problems with traditional solutions.

Today’s rapidly changing world produces a slew of evolving challenges, often taking even the most future-facing leaders by surprise. Adaptive leaders aren’t fortune-tellers, however. Although they may have ideas about the future, their strength is not in predicting it. Their ability to recognize challenges, maintain resilience, empower others, and be open to continuous learning enables them to retain their effectiveness as leaders.

The core principles of adaptive leadership describe well the abilities complex and evolving challenges call for.

  • Diagnosis. Adaptive leaders recognize and can tell apart technical challenges from those requiring innovative thinking and new approaches.
  • Productive level of distress. Intelligent leaders know how to create levels of distress about change that spark action. At the same time, however, they preserve a safe working environment that allows their teams to produce innovative solutions.
  • A bird’s eye view. Adopting a broader perspective by stepping away from the minutiae of the challenges allows leaders to better understand the nature of the problems they’re facing.
  • Clearing assumptions lets leaders overcome resistance to change and innovation.
  • Adaptive leaders accept resistance as an inevitable component of change and go about overcoming it calmly through open dialogue and a constructive attitude.
  • Adaptive change often requires sacrifices. Intelligent leaders acknowledge the losses they may incur while adapting and don’t sweep them under the proverbial rug.
  • The frontier of knowledge requires experimentation as an effective tool for discovery.
  • Adaptive leaders involve those under them in leadership and change management.
  • A disciplined, long-term approach ensures an effective response to evolving challenges.
  • In the context of adaptive leadership, accountability translates to openness in decision-making and willingness to accept feedback.

Traditional leadership tends to rely on tried and proven ways to handle challenges, including emerging ones. It may fail to recognize challenges that call for innovative solutions.

Adaptive leadership embraces change. It values a proactive response over resistance, in line with the mantra that change rarely fails because it’s too early. It tends to fail when it’s too late.

Today’s world is more complex for businesses and individuals than ever before. If we add rapid change and the resulting uncertainty to the mix, it becomes clear that traditional leadership models no longer satisfy the evolving needs of organizations. Constant learning and adaptation are indispensable for survival. The resilience and innovation that characterize adaptive leadership also make a significant difference.

Some of the factors that have led to this increased need for adaptive leadership are globalization, the ever-increasing speed of change, and technology.

Few leaders had to face and navigate more complex challenges than former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Apple Inc. is an obvious example of an organization revitalized by innovation. Upon his return to the helm of the company, Steve Jobs reinvented its products in design, function, and user experience. He created an integrated ecosystem of services, hardware, and software, allowing Apple to assume the role of industry leader and trendsetter.

Adapting to Diverse Team Needs

Intelligent leaders acknowledge the needs of their teams and go to great lengths to satisfy them. Here’s what an adaptive leader can do to address diverse team needs:

  • Adaptive leaders are inclusive, culturally sensitive leaders. They understand and respect the diverse cultural backgrounds of their employees.
  • An adaptive leader is a skilled communicator who doesn’t shy away from providing flexible work schedules and support.
  • Intelligent leaders provide opportunities and resources to support the professional development of their employees.
  • Adaptive leaders don’t lose sight of the succession needs of their organizations.
  • In addition to conducting diversity and inclusion-focused initiatives, intelligent leaders check in with their teams regularly to remain connected to their evolving needs.

The leadership skills that support these strategies are empathy, emotional intelligence, and active listening. To be culturally sensitive and good communicators, leaders must be empathetic. To understand their teams’ needs, they must listen and understand the emotional as well as resource-wise aspects of these needs.
