As we approach the final few days of 2013 and celebrate Christmas and the holiday season, it is a great time to reflect on our personal and professional accomplishments as well as the setback’s and disappointments that we have experienced along the way. I have come to realize–through my own personal and professional reflection as well as what I learned from the many successful executives I am privileged to know and have had the opportunity to coach–that each of us are massively capable of creating our own compelling futures! How do we do it? One of my Laws of Intelligent Leadership appears below. I believe if each of us internalizes, embraces, and executes this Law, there is no stopping us in our pursuit of the proverbial “promised land”. All of this may sound selfish.

However, it is important to understand that you cannot create your compelling future without creating happiness in others and creating happiness and “centeredness” in yourself. In fact, you will never achieve anything worthwhile in life unless you also have brought abundant value to others…family members or relationships in business. I have come to realize that each of us can achieve a consistent state of happiness and “centeredness” in our personal and professional lives if we first make others happy and “centered”, by being courteous to others, showing compassion, and being altruistic. If you want to be happy, make other people happy!
